A Message from Rhonda Perry and Kendra Shot, Co-Chairs of the 2011 Queens County Seafest Committee:

The Co-Chairs and Committee members of the 2011 Queens County Seafest Committee would like to send a heartfelt THANK YOU to everyone who participated in our Festival in anyway.

First, thank you goes out to our sponsors; without your support year after year there would not be a festival.

Second, thank you goes to the volunteers; once again without all of you we could not have a festival. Trivia fact ( to put on Queens County Seafest over 150 people volunteered their time; some volunteered for just a couple of hours and other volunteers for many hours.) Every volunteer is a treasured member of the Seafest team.

Thirdly, a special thank you to all the vendors who came out and helped provide more for the people to see and do along with great eats; the food vendors were a welcome part of our festival; Kinsmen French fries; who beside myself didn’t have some of them more than once; Diabetes fundraiser being put on by Becky MacDonald who sold wonderful chili; that I noticed a lot of people teaming up with the French fries; and the Liverpool Curling Club a new group this year was selling Pizza; we had Chippy Chippy Bang Bang who ran out of fish the ones who missed out will have to go Liverpool and see her in her usual spot, the Anglican Church was selling fudge, cookies and treats shaped like sharks and lobsters along with sandwiches, and to finish off the food we had Lil Orbit Donuts.

The vendors who came to promote their organizations were MADD, Works for Widows, Canada’s Best, Duck’s Unlimited and all of the local crafters who rounded out our vendor section.

Cole Ford’s Row for Charity of course, was won by Team Cole, although I will say that Team MacKenzie finished in a strong second, with the Region of Queens rounding out the prize pool. The prize breakdown was 50% to Team Cole’s Charity “Queens Association for Supported Living”, 30% to Team MacKenzie’s Charity “Queens Early Childhood Development” and 20% to Team Region of Queens’ Charity “ Queens SPCA”

Finally, but definitely not last, are all of the wonderful people who came out and supported our event. Without the people participating in the Shark Derby, enjoying the entertainment we would not have an event. Speaking of entertainment what a wonderful lineup of talent again this year; hoping to have some of them back again next year. My final thank you goes to Ground Search and Rescue who kept us all on the right side of the road and who provided the security that kept our area secure for the whole weekend.

We are hoping to see everyone at Seafest again next year; keep an eye out as we will start selling the Landlubber packages and Derby registrations on line. For a list of all the winners check out our website: www.queenscountyseafest.com and our facebook page.

Respectfully submitted by

Rhonda Perry and Kendra Shot

2011 Co-Chairs of Queens County Seafest

The ‘Main Event’ at Queens County Seafest has always been the shark fishing derby. Fishermen from across the province have attended the derby year after year in search of that elusive ’big fish’ and annual bragging rights. Stories of the ‘one that got away’ can be found with the crew of nearing any boat at the marina. One of my favourite tales, and a frustrating one for Bill McDonald of Milton, was when his boat ran out of gas just a few miles from the Brookyln Breakwater. Bill has always maintained that had he been able inch his way to the finish line and qualify that day, his shark would have won the tournament.

A few weeks ago Bill McDonald sent me an email update to ‘our tournament tale’ with this photo attached. Bill explained that it was during Seafest 2006 when his boat ran out of gas only “a few hundred feet” from the Brooklyn Breakwater. Bill noted that when he finally reached the marina his fish measured 11 feet 6 inches in length and weighed 356 lbs. He also said that as far as he was aware, there was no bigger fish landed at the derby. Well..I don’t think you will find Bill and his crew running out of gas again anytime soon!
